About Mikel Hubanks

My roots trace back to a tiny rural farming community in western Oklahoma where I attended the same school system from kindergarten through high school.  While I grew up in a family that was far from perfect, I was shown the love of Jesus at a very young age and actively involved in our local church throughout my childhood and adolescent years.  Coming to the realization and acceptance of God’s gift of grace, I made my public profession of faith in the form of baptism while in grade school.  From serving as president in our school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter to participating in mission trips with World Changers around the country and to Mozambique, Africa, I felt God’s calling of service early in my life and was fortunate to receive guidance from incredible mentors during my formative years.

After graduating from Sayre High School, I attended Oklahoma Baptist University and received my undergraduate degree in biochemistry.  At no other point in my life was I as shaped, molded, and tested in my faith than during those years.  Intermixing rigorous scientific study with deep theological and philosophical concepts while being encouraged to question long-held beliefs solidified my resolve and faith in Christ Jesus.  It was also during that time I met the most talented, captivating, and illustrious young woman who I would later be fortunate and blessed enough to call my wife.

After graduating from OBU, I attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and received my medical degree.  Rebecca and I were married just prior to graduation and exactly 2 weeks later moved to Rochester, MN where I completed my residency training in urologic surgery at Mayo Clinic.  I have been in private practice in western Phoenix for the past 10 years and have been enormously blessed to treat, minister to, and share the gospel with a number of individuals in their darkest hour confronting an overwhelming cancer diagnosis.  I have also served in leadership capacities on our practice’s executive committee and various hospital affiliations.

Rebecca and I are parents to 4 incredible children who keep us on our toes and remind us every day of our fallibility.  DSBC has been our church home for a little over 9 years.  While we have been present for major changes over that time, we have also witnessed the steady hand of God permeate this congregation and elevate DSBC as a beacon of hope and acceptance for so many desperately longing for an open and welcoming community truly centered around the love of Christ.

I am humbled and honored for the opportunity to serve alongside the other remarkable leaders of DSBC.  As has been the driving force for the direction of my and my family’s lives, it is my commitment to continuously seek the wisdom of our Father as the first and foremost guiding factor for DSBC in the years ahead.
